Rundfunkbeitrag (GEZ) Explained: Why You Got That Letter and What to Do
A few weeks after you register your address (Anmeldung), a letter arrives from the "ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice". Many newcomers think it's a scam or a mistake. It's not. This is the Rundfunkbeitrag, often still called "GEZ". Here's what it is, in plain words.
Expanding A4 Document Folder
Germany sends a lot of letters. Keep them all in one place. Pick one that:
- Is A4 size (German letters are A4)
- Has many sections with labels
- Closes well so nothing falls out
What is it and how much is it?
- It's a fee for public TV and radio in Germany.
- In 2026 it is €18.36 per month, usually paid every three months (€55.08).
- A rise to €18.64 from January 2027 has been proposed but still needs approval (source).
"But I don't even have a TV!"
That doesn't matter. The fee is charged per flat (Wohnung), not per person or device. One flat pays one fee. In a shared flat (WG), only one person needs to pay and the others can share the cost. If someone in your flat already pays, reply to the letter with their contribution number (Beitragsnummer).
Who can apply for an exemption?
According to the source above, these groups can apply (not automatic, you must apply):
- Students who get BAföG and don't live with their parents.
- People who get Bürgergeld or Grundsicherung.
- Some people with certain disabilities (full or reduced fee).
Regular international students without BAföG usually still have to pay. Rules can change, so always check the official site rundfunkbeitrag.de.
What to do when the letter comes
- Don't ignore it. Unpaid fees can grow with reminders and extra costs.
- If someone in your flat already pays: reply with their Beitragsnummer.
- If you're the one paying: set up a SEPA direct debit so you never miss a payment.
- If you might be exempt: apply online and upload your official decision letter (Bescheid).
- Keep all letters in one folder.
A simple document folder or file box helps a lot. Germany sends a lot of paper letters, and you'll need them again for taxes, visas and contracts.
