Diwali 2026 in Germany: A Simple Shopping Checklist for Your Flat
Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. If you live in Germany, the festival needs a bit of planning. There's no Diwali market around the corner, and most of us live in rented flats with smoke detectors and neighbours close by. Here is a simple list so you can get everything ready on time without stress.
LED Tea Lights
The easiest way to make your flat glow, safely. Pick ones that:
- Have no real flame: safe near curtains, kids and smoke detectors
- Can be used again for Christmas
- Use batteries you can replace (check before buying)
1. Lights that are safe for a rented flat
Real oil diyas look beautiful, but in a small flat with curtains, kids and a smoke detector on the ceiling, many families switch to LED tea lights for most of the decoration. You can still light one or two real diyas for puja and keep an eye on them.
- Put LED tea lights on windowsills, the balcony door and the entrance.
- Use indoor fairy lights (Lichterkette) for the window. Many people in Germany already use them in winter, so they're easy to find.
- If you use real diyas or candles, keep them away from curtains and never leave them burning when you leave the room.
2. Rangoli without a mess
Rangoli powder on a German wooden or laminate floor can be hard to clean. Two easy options:
- Rangoli stencils: they make neat designs quickly, which is great with kids.
- Make it on a board or tray: make the rangoli on a big tray or cardboard, so you can move it and clean up easily later.
3. Gift packing for friends and colleagues
Diwali is a lovely moment to share sweets with German neighbours and colleagues, and most people really like it. Put a few sweets in a nice box with a small card explaining what Diwali is. It's simple and people remember it.
4. Sweets and snacks
You can make sweets at home or order from Indian grocery shops in Germany. Many of them run special Diwali offers, so check your usual shop's website early, because popular items sell out close to the date.
5. Small puja corner
If you don't have a mandir at home, a small shelf or side table with a clean cloth, a diya, flowers and a small plate is enough. A steel or brass plate (thali) is useful for puja every year.
Diwali Checklist (print it)

- Gift boxes + small cards for neighbours and colleagues.
- Sweets: make at home or order early.

- Video call family in India and plan for the time difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I light real diyas in a German flat?
Many people do, carefully. Keep them away from curtains, never leave them alone, and remember smoke detectors. Check your rental rules (Hausordnung) if you're unsure.
Can I burst crackers on Diwali in Germany?
In Germany, fireworks are normally sold and used around New Year's Eve, not on other dates. Better to skip crackers on Diwali and enjoy lights instead.
What is a nice Diwali gift for German colleagues?
A small box of Indian sweets with a card explaining the festival is simple and personal.
