Rule one: the cheapest deal is the thing you do not buy
Black Friday is built to make you buy fast. A timer, a red price, "only 3 left". Before it starts, write a short list of things your family really needs this winter, and a total budget. If it is not on the list, it is not a deal for you — however big the red number is.
How fake discounts work
The trick is almost always the "before" price. A shop shows a high crossed-out price — often the UVP (the maker's suggested price) — that nobody ever paid. Then "minus 40%" looks huge, even if the product sold for the same price last month.
Another trick: prices go up in October, then "fall" on Black Friday back to normal.
The EU rule that protects you: the 30-day price
In Germany, when a shop advertises a price cut, it has to use the lowest price of the last 30 days as the comparison. So look for words like "niedrigster Preis der letzten 30 Tage" or "vorheriger Preis" near the discount.
If the discount is only against the UVP and there is no 30-day price shown, be careful. That "minus 50%" may mean nothing.
Check the price history — free, two minutes
Free browser add-ons and websites like Keepa or camelcamelcamel show a chart of a product's price on Amazon.de over months. If the Black Friday price is the same as in September, it is not a deal. If it is clearly the lowest in a year, go for it.
On a phone, you can open these sites in the browser and paste the Amazon link.
Who is actually selling it?
On Amazon, look under the buy button: "Versand durch Amazon" or "Verkauf und Versand durch Amazon" usually means easy returns and fast delivery. A seller you have never heard of, shipping from far away, with a price much lower than everyone else — skip it.
Outside Amazon, watch for fake shops. They often appear in Instagram and Facebook ads with unbelievable prices and only ask for bank transfer (Vorkasse). The Verbraucherzentrale has a free "Fakeshop-Finder" where you can check a shop's website before you pay.
Your return rights
- For most things you buy online in Germany you can send them back within 14 days without giving a reason (Widerrufsrecht).
- Amazon usually gives longer returns for purchases in the Christmas season. The exact return date is shown on the product page and in your order — check it.
- Keep the box until you are sure.
Careful with "pay later". Buy-now-pay-later and payment in instalments feel easy on Black Friday. In January those payments all arrive at once, often next to the heating bill. If you cannot pay it today, it is not cheap.
What is usually worth it for a desi family
- Kitchen machines — air fryer, induction pressure cooker, a good mixer. These often get real discounts.
- Winter clothes — thermal wear, jackets, shoes, especially for growing kids.
- Things for home — vacuum cleaner, dehumidifier, warm lights.

Usually not worth waiting for: groceries, atta and rice, everyday cleaning things. Those are rarely part of the big deals.
