Gifts family in India really enjoy
- German chocolate. Ritter Sport, Milka, Kinder — cheap here, loved there. December is cool enough that it does not melt in the suitcase.
- Creams and body care. Nivea, Balea from dm, Kneipp. Aunties and cousins use them every day. Buy big tubes at dm or Rossmann, not at the airport.
- Kitchen things. A good German knife, a small WMF pan or a set of steel storage boxes. Useful for years, and people remember who gave it.
- Warm wear for Punjab and North India. Thermal inner wear, good socks, gloves. December nights up north are cold, and quality thermal is expensive there.
- A classic smell. 4711 Kölnisch Wasser is a real German classic and a nice story to tell.
- For kids. Playmobil or small building sets, German colouring pencils, a nice school bag.
- Sneakers. Adidas and Puma are German brands — sometimes cheaper here in sales, but check sizes and prices in India first.
Check the gummy sweets. Most normal gummy bears in Germany (like classic Haribo) are made with pork gelatine. For vegetarian, Sikh, Hindu or Muslim families that is a real problem. Look for "vegan" or "vegetarisch" on the pack, or skip gummies and take chocolate.
What not to take
- Medicines as gifts. Different names, different doses, sometimes different rules. Take only your own medicines, with the doctor's paper.
- Big electronics like a TV. A TV has no duty-free benefit — you pay full duty.
- Packets from other people that you did not pack or cannot check. You are responsible for everything in your bag.
Indian customs rules 2026 — the short version
India changed its baggage rules on 2 February 2026. The main points:
- ₹75,000 duty-free per person for new goods and gifts — for Indian residents, NRIs, OCI cardholders and tourists of Indian origin. It used to be ₹50,000.
- Every person has their own limit. A family cannot add the limits together to bring one expensive item.
- One laptop per adult (18+) is duty-free on top of that.
- Alcohol: up to 2 litres.
- Gold jewellery is now counted by weight, not value: 40 g for women and 20 g for men, if you have lived abroad for more than a year.
- Cash: declare foreign currency notes above 5,000 US dollars in value.
- Over the limit? Go to the red channel and declare. Walking through green with undeclared goods can get you fined.
Your own used clothes, phone and personal things do not count toward the limit.
Keep the receipts for expensive new things in your hand luggage. If customs asks, you show the real price in a second. You can also declare before your flight in the Indian Customs ATITHI app.

- Check your airline's weight limit. Gifts add up faster than you think.
- Creams and perfumes over 100 ml go in the big suitcase, not hand luggage.
- Wrap glass and bottles in clothes, and put liquids in a plastic bag.
